Steampunk garden

I came across this painting by Paul Klee which I thought was full of movement and the flowers looked as if they were mechanical. I decided to use it as inspiration for an embroidery called Steampunk Garden.
For the background I used hand dyed cotton, which I printed and stencilled and then covered with a green sheer.
I embroidered stalks with raised stem stitch varying the colours to make them stand out.

The background was then stitched with five different coloured threads to make areas of differing shades. Cog wheel shapes were stitched only around their edges to make them stand out.

I then made wired flowers and leaves with silk, attaching them to the stalks and background, to make them look as if they were moving.

Cog wheels were used in the centre of the flowers and then embroidered over.
The central flower was built up of layers of silk, angelina, covered wires, lace and embroidery to make the flower look as if it was spinning.
A mechanical bird is flying in from the top right corner with a key in its beak to set the garden twisting and turning.

This is the completed piece of Steampunk Garden.
